Cognitive function stack explorer

Pick a type to see its four functions in order — what each one does when it is working, what it looks like when it is overplayed, and where stress tends to show up.

  1. 01DominantNi — Introverted Intuition

The default setting. Fast, automatic, and usually where you are strongest and least self-aware.

    Working well

Arrives at a conclusion before it can explain the steps, and is usually right about where something is heading.

    Overplayed

Certainty without evidence, and dismissing the present because the future model is more interesting.

  2. 02AuxiliaryFe — Extraverted Feeling

The supporting hand. Balances the dominant and is the usual place growth comes from in early adulthood.

    Working well

Notices the person who has gone quiet and adjusts the room before anyone else sees a problem.

    Overplayed

Managing everyone's mood at the cost of saying what is actually true.

  3. 03TertiaryTi — Introverted Thinking

Available but uneven. Often used for relief, and can be indulged when avoiding something harder.

    Working well

Finds the inconsistency in an argument and insists on the accurate word rather than the convenient one.

    Overplayed

Refining the model forever and never testing it against reality.

  4. 04InferiorSe — Extraverted Sensing

The weak spot, and where stress shows. Under pressure this shows up in a crude, exaggerated form.

    Working well

Reads a room or a situation instantly and acts while others are still discussing it.

    Overplayed

Chasing stimulation, and solving in the moment what needed a plan.

Common questions

What is a cognitive function stack?
It is the four-function order the type framework assigns to each type: a dominant function, an auxiliary that balances it, a tertiary, and an inferior. It describes which mental habits come easily and which take effort.
What does the inferior function mean?
It is the least developed function in the stack. Under sustained stress it tends to appear in a crude, exaggerated form — for example a normally strategic person becoming impulsive and sensation-seeking.
Are cognitive functions scientifically validated?
No. The function stack comes from Jungian theory and is not supported by trait-psychology research in the way the Big Five is. It is useful descriptive vocabulary, not a measurement.

How to read this

Function stacks are descriptive vocabulary from Jungian type theory, not a measured trait. They are useful for naming habits you already recognise, and unreliable as a prediction of behaviour.
